TAXES IN SAMOA.
SALARIES AND STORES. (O.O.) APIA, April 11. At the last meeting of the Legislative Council the Revenue Amendment Ordinance, 1941, was passed after a lengthy discussion. The bill provides for the clarification of certain points and the removal of anomalies in the Revenue Ordinance, 1920, and amendments, and also introduces a graduated salary tax and a graduated store tax. Under these taxes income not previously liable to taxation will be included.
The Administration has stressed the point that the new taxes will he borne by thoee most able to bear them and that it is not intended that the taxes ■shall 'be handed on to the consumer. Exemptions are provided for married men with large families. Salee of Samoan produce" are not liable to store tax. The rate of etore tax rises from j> per cent at £3000 to 5 per cent at £f»3,000.
The feature most appreciated by the general public is the reduction in the rate of surcharge for licenses and taxes overdue, from the old rate of 10 por cent and 25 per cent to a flat rate of 5 per cent on overdue taxee and license fee*. This should relieve many caeee of hardship.
