One Down, One Up DOLES turned down as career de- " strovers by some performers often turn into career makers for those who substitute. A few weeks ago Rita Johnson refused to play a short-lived, ■unsympathetic vixen with Ann Sothern in "Maisie Was a Lady." The job was turned over to Joan Terry, almost a newcomer. Miss Perry threw lire and brimstone into her performance and, with good looks to help, is to-day on the straight road toward screen fame. Meanwhile Miss Johnson is in bad with her studio and may not get over it for months.
