BOEING CLIPPERS.
IMPROVED PERFORMANCES.
Essentially the same the ,-ix Clippers already in service over the Pacific and Atlantic, but representing certain modiiicatioiir- and refinements, the lirst of six new Hoeing Clipper*, built for Pan-American Airways ha* bei-n delivered to the company, according to the latest issue of "Clipper News,"' which arrived at Auckland by the California Clipper. Britain is a!«-o acquiring machines of this type tin thf maintenance of certain ocean communications. Due tn acceleration of production bv tho Hoeing Company to clear the wav for huge national defence orders, and al-o to make the Clippers available for commercial service at an c-arlier date, tin.* new licet is beimj completed considerably ahead of schedule.
Ihe endues in the new models are Wright Cyclone 14'.- with 1000 horsepower. each available for take olTs. lastead of the l.jijn hp. of the original engines. Hamilton Standard propellers of a new type, with slightlv larger diameter, ore used. Piiel ..-apacitv ha* been raised by 121 Hi gallons to a total of ">IOO.
Rearrangement.-? in passenger cabins include a new decorative scheme which employs a fabric w.i!! rv-oring into which is woven a lepeating map of the world, and a new arr:ingem< tit of lounge furniture which enables berths to be made up in that comparr ment. The revisions i i itoive-power, propellers and fuel capacity make for a quicker take-off, greater carrying capacity an<l an increase in cruising range of more than 4000 mile.s. Most of these changes have been, or are being, made in the original six dippers.
