flood progress is being ma<le by the City and Newton (Ist Battalion) Home Guard. With a little ceremonial drill just to keep them in shape and plenty of field exercises, the troops are in fine fettle. Last Sunday was their first full day parade. Rehearsal for the big parade, which, by the way, is taking place on May 10, was gone through. During the day a competition was held among A
Company. The O.C. of A Company kindly donated a silver cup for tli'c platoon which paino<l the most points in marching. No. .'! Platoon were the winners, while tlie Maori platoon came a STOfxl second. The cup will he held by the winning;' platoon for three months. Bayonet practice was indulged in and the boys just about know the most effective place to push the business end of their bayonets. The parade was dismissed earlier than was proposed, on account of the rain making it rather wet underfoot for those who had on light shoes.
