STERLING WIN.

EASTER HANDICAP.

GLEN ABB'S HURDLES.

OAKS TO BELLE CANE.

The *un shone out at noon to-day for the opening of the Auckland Racing Club's autumn meeting. There was a large attendance, including many of sport-minded people eager to sec (lie champion three-year-old colt Kindergarten in action in the Easter Handicap.

The track had dried up well after recent rain, and was in fii»t-class condition when the initial division of the Onslow Stakets was run. This wa» won by River Plate, who is run in the joint interests of the president of the club, Mr. O. Nicholson, and the Hon. K. R. Davis. River Plate was a winner at Whangarei eight days ago, and to-day. after taking up a prominent position in the early running, led into the straight to win all out by a narrow margin from lialblair.

Water Vixen was the first to show out from Mala Wings. Miss (J<iv and Kivcr Plate, with Dalblair close up. l!a 1 b!<i ir. Mala Wings and lliver Plato were on terms entering the straight, where lliver Plate got to the front and went on to beat Balblair in a punishing linish. The third horses was Mala Winps, slightly ahead of Miss liar and .losetie.

In the second division Prince who was fairly well supported, took t lie lead a quarter of a mile from home and won with something in reserve from Opuatia. The last-named was the first to show out from Powys. who quickly got to the front, but weakened as soo;i as challenged by Prince Louis just before the straight was entered. Opuatia then put in a challenge, but had mi chance. Bctterinan wos third. followed by Babrow, Hogarth and June Tide.

Belie Cane's Second Oaks. Be-lle Cane, who was sliphtly better supported than (Jay IJosette. followed the latter at an interval of two lengthuntil two furlongs fruui home. when she headed the le Papa mare and carried on for a decisive success. There is little to describe, tiay Kosctte leading past the stand two lengths in front of Belle Cane, with another four to Court Favourite. They raced in this order to the turn, and when Belle Cane took the initiative two furlongs from home it was all over. This is Belle Cane's second Oaks, the filly winning at Riccartoii last November.

The Easter Thrill. No greater performance in the Ka-tcr Handicap has ever been recorded than that of the tip weight Kindergarten. This three-year-old colt, who has carried everything before him since he struck foi 111 early in the season, was regarded by keen students of the sport a~ in a hopele.-s position with only a <|uaiter of a mile to go. but w hen called up.ol bv hii* rider Wiggins lie literally foi.-ed his way through inside the distance to wear Brazen Bold down and win bv a head.

The margin of the victory of Kindergarten has no bearing at all upon his performance. In the early he warslow, taking a con»idcra ulc time to gather hie pace, with the result that Jialf a mile frimi home lie had only three horses behind him. with the re«t of the field a long way in the lead. He made up a little ground cio-r-ing the top. but TT iggins, holding the rails, still appeared to ;>c prostrated. It was not until the distance was rcidied that a slight opening gleamed ahead and then Kindergarten, called upon for his best, responded with a marvellous run, ;< win going away.

Before the ]>ost was reached cheers broke out from all parts of the coui.se and 'both liorse and rider .vere given a wonderful reception as they returned to scale.

Brazen Bold was the first to show out when the barrier was released, but Bronwen almost immediately went to the front to be followed along the back by Brazen Bold. Duvach. Suleiman. Pirate King and Lou liosa. with Kindergarten several lengths behind. Black Thread had moved into third position behind Brazen Bold and Suleiman as they crossed the top. with lxm Rosa. Bronwen. Monte (,'risto and Sercnata following in close order. Kindergarten was then at the rear of this bunch. Brazen Bold. Surveyor Cencral (who had moved up smartly). Koxen. Duvach. Suleiman. Black Thread and Lou Rosa still held command at the distance, where the pace was fast, and Kindergarten came through on the outside of Brazen Bold and Suleiman. In a great finish Kindergarten got up to have the race won just before the judge was reached. Monte (,'risto came home well for third place, with Duvach next, closely followed by Koxen and Pirate King.
