THE BLACKOUT.
NECESSARY SCHEME.
OFFICIAL ASSURANCE GIVEN.
Following a conference held last night at the Town Hall between Commodore W. E. Parry, C.8., chief of the naval staff, Air Commodore H. W. L. Saunders, M.C., chief of the air staff, and the central committee of the Emergency Precautions Scheme Organisation, an assurance was given that the blackout in Auckland was necessarv.
The conference was arranged by the Hon. R. Semple, Minister of National Service, following- requests that citizens should be informed of the Government's intentions concerning the duration and extent of the blackout. After arriving yesterday afternoon by plane from Wellington, Commodore Parry and Air Commodore Saunders, observed the effect of the blackout and then met the committee.
When the conference had concluded, the Mayor, Sir Ernest Davis, as chairman of the Emergency Precautions Scheme Organisation, issued the following statement on behalf of the committee: "The consultation held with the chiefs of the naval and air staffs completely satisfied the central committee as to'thc necessity for the introduction in Auckland of the reduced lighting scheme and the observance of its terms by all sections of the community. As an outcome of the conference it was decided that the scheme cannot proceed other than in its present form and that shortly a stipulated date will be zxed on and after which the provisions of the regulations will be enforced.
"After the holidays wardens will be called together to receive instructions that will ensure for the future a uniform applk'ataion of the scheme.'
