Leads Field in Qualifying Play

Of Easter Tourney.

Playing in the Auckland Golf Clube Easter tournament Pax Smith gave a sample of his real ability by outclassing the qualifying field in the first round with a card of 73. Out in 37, he started home with a 2; with three holes to play he wanted fours for a 70. He hooked his drive into the trees at the sixteenth and lcefc a stroke, took the orthodox 5 at the next, and finally mtesed a Coot putt on the last for the "four.

Only two other playere, A. R. Jones (Otahuhu) and C'. X. Jncobscn broke 60. In the afternoon round Smith clipped to 82 (44-38) but still had the best aggregate 155, three strokes better than Jones and Jacobsen. Only one player, A. X". \oung, broke 80 in the afternoon. The best net score over the 30 holes was that of A. Irving (10) 72, 71 —143.
