WHANGAREI PRESIDENT WINS DOUBLE WITH BRAHMAN AT HIS HOME MEETING.

THERE is every reason to believe

that in Brahman Mr. R. G. Hosking, president of the Whangarei Racing Club, has a galloper who is likely to develop into a good class handicap performer.

The three-year-old eon of Bulandshar and Sunbar won a double at Whangarei, and although the class he defeated was not strong on cither occasion, a horse can do no more than win. This Brahman did in good style on both days, his success in the Autumn Handicap, principal race on the card on Saturday, being accomplished witli ease.

Brahman had eight starts as a two-year-old, and after running second to Ringling in the Oroua Nursery at Feilding on December 2 and third to Air flight and RingUng at Stratford on New "iears Day. lie went on to win at Wanganui exactly a month later. Air Flight again beat him on the second day of that meeting, and he ran third to Dr. McGregor Grant's Phaleron and Barry Boy at New Plymouth on March 7.

At that time Brahman was trained by 11. Scally at Ilawpra, lint lie com - Toenced this season with R. S. Bagby

at Ellerslie, and in his dozen starts since then he has won three races and finished in minor places on four occasions.

During recent Aveeks Brahman has made considerable improvement, which he demonstrated *>n the training tracks while working with Night Pilot, and his future is nothing if not bright.

Another sportsman to have a winning turn at Whangarei was the Waikato breeder Mr. L. S. Otway, who races Mayfair in partnership with M. H. Otway and E. D. Williams. Mayfair won the Oneralii Hack in good style {rom Onetea and Veyana, and this was her second win since she was purchased a few months ago at a moderate figure. She was a rank outsider—eleventh favourite in a field of fourteen—at Tauranga on Marcli 22, but that made no difference at all to her chance, as she moved up smartly at the straightentrance to win going away.

Mr. Otway has been breeding thoroughbreds in the Waikato for many years, and his Trelawney Stud at Cambridge is one of the best known and most successful in the Auckland Province. For some years he had Gay Shield there, and bred such well-known performers as Gay Sheila, Gay Blonde, Gay Sheik, Gay Seton and Gay Chief, all by the Gay Crusader horse. A lew years ago Mr. Otway imported the stallion Foxbrldge, and he has been

an outstanding success, and holds a commanding load in the winning sires' list for the current season. The foundation mares at his stud were Persia, who died a short time ago after leaving 17 foals, and Lady Marie, dam of eight winners. Foxbridge was later joined at the stud by the young Solario horse Vermeer, who is meeting with considerable success. Mr. Otway has been both a seller and a buyer at the national sales on an extensive scale, and one the latest mares purchased' for the Trelawney Stud is Mayfair, who is raced by him in part-

nership with his brother. Mr. M. H. Otway, and Mr. E. I). Williams. Mavfair was bought at Trentham last January for 320 guineas, and has since won two races, paying a win dividend of over two sjore on the fir. t occasion, so she i» now a very cheap mare. Flying Vixen, another . Trelawney Stud product, was also successful at Whangarei. She is the second foal of the good race mare Flying Juliet, and as she was a February foal she ,was very lightly raced as a two and three-year-old, but she now appears to be coming right.
