NEW BRIGHTON BOROUGH. CHRISTCHURCH SUBURB. (0.C.) CHRISTCHUECH, thus day. New Brighton has ceased to exist as a borough, and is now one of the city's suburbs. f Largest amalgamation in the history of Chrietchurcli, New Brighton has added 1051 acres to the city's area, now totalling 12.200 acres, and "its 5000 residents swell the population of Christchurch City to over 100,000. Spreydon borough, joined with the city on April 21, 1925, added 1295 acree and 4723 people, and Woolston Borough, amalgamated in November, 1921, added 4208 people and 1270 acres.. Coming to the city with the amalgamation are 25 miles of formed roads, 22 mile* of sealed footpaths and 27 miles of curbing and channelling. One bridge and part interest in the tramway bridge are also transferred, together with two domains—Kawhiti and New Brighton. The boards have ceased to exist, and the land will be administered by the City Council.

The Mayor (Mr. E. L. Smith), at the final meeting of the Xew Brighton Council, said that the financial statement would show a small credit balance.

The borough was removed from Selwyn County by procbimation on December 19, 1890. The first meeting was held on February 15, 1897, the Mayor being Mr. R. C. Bishop, and the first town clerk Mr. William Blake ===== \
