Dewey, said to-day that the Ford Motor Company had agreed to reinstate about 1000 men alleged to have l>een discharged for union activity, thus averting strike threats by the united automobile workers of the Committee of Industrial Organisation. Mr. Dewey said there were four major . developments averting the threatened , strike which otherwise would have in- [ volved 100,000 employees, and 154.000.000 ' dollars in defence contracts, and would , have been the first strike against the Ford Company's Detroit plants. Tlioso developments were the rein--1 statement of the 1000 workers, the ; acquiescence of Mr. Harry Bennct for personnel director to discuss matters with Mr. Dewey, and, a problem that warrants attention, that the company gives assurances that it docs not contcni"- ; plato further lay-offs, and the scheduling of the hearing hy the National Labour Relations Board to determine whether a collective bargaining election shall be held among the Ford employees.
