Tennis Champion Of Champions Semi-Finalists Found.
(By HALF-VOLLEY.) Good progress lias been made with the champion of champions tennis contest, and the semi-finalists in both the men's and ladies' competition have been found, not before one or two upsets had taken place. Mrs. T. Bell (West End), who was expected to reach the semifinal, was beaten in a strenuous match by Mrs. Lewis (Winstone Park), C—4, B—lo, B—o. Mrs. Lewis went on to defeat Miss McCoombe (Nicholson Park) again in three sets, 3—6, 6—4, 6 —3. In the next section Miss G. Bark (Ngatira) scored wins over Miss Hoyte (Vauxhall), 7 —5. 10—8, and against Miss J. Howard (Otahuhu), 6—3, 6—2. Miss Toyte's performance was a verygood one against a formidable opponent. Miss J. Ferguson (Unity) came through in the next section with two wins, both requiring three sets. In the first she defeated Miss Goudie (Fergusson Park), 2 —o, 6—3, (> —2, and then defeated Dunholme's first player, Miss I. F. Rodger, -t—6, G—", *6—o. Mrs. Cox (Campbell Park) completes the semifinalists with wins over Miss Crookbain (Hallyburton Johnstone), 6—4, 6 —l, and Miss N. Glover (Mount Jtoskill), o—7, G—o, 6—l.
The position now is that Mrs. Lewis plays Miss Bark and Miss Ferguson plays Mrs. Cox, and it is difficult to pick the winner. These ladies appear to be very evenly matched, and some good contests are bound to eventuate.
In the men's section, the semi-finalists are M. Aldred (Winstone Park), who plays L. Waller (Fcrgusson Tark), while B. J. Baxter (Campbell Park) meets J. A. Hurley (Mount Eden). Baxter and Aldred may be the finalists, in which case it will "be a contest between one of the most promising juniors and a player of the older school, who possesses a thorough knowledge of cours craft. The game should be interesting. Aldred defeated Bundle (Ngatira) 3—6, C—3, C—4 after Bundle had disposed of N. Kingstono (West End) in a close match, o—4, 5 —7. G—4. Th<> next section saw Waller defeat Barton (Mount Roskill). 7--5, o—t,0 —t, and W. H. Gladstone (Unity), 10—8, (5 —4. Gladstone had previously defeated W. Iluckstep (Hallyburton Johnstone), 2—o, o—4, C —2, when the latter appeared to have the match in his grasp when leading 4—2 in the second set. Gladstone will be recalled as pressing to the full Rodney Smith in the hard court championship last year. Baxter's wins were at the expense of Zane (Vanxhall), 7—5, 7—5, and H. Toms (Otaluiliu), G—4, G—4. Hurley, who had a bye, defeated the youthful R. Procter (Ngataringa) quite easilv. the score being G—l, 6—2.
