It wit- announced by the assistantdistrict electrical engineer, Mr. L. S. Payne, that Lake Coleridge, would be out of net inn for some, time, and that the Wnitiiki station would carry as much of the Canterbury load a.p possible. He addressed an urgent appeal to consumers to conserve power.
Mr. Payne confirmed that there would be a certain amount of flooding when the casing bui>t, as some time elapsed before tin , gate's cutting off the bead of water were closed, but at present he did not know the lull extent of the damage.
Power went ofT in the city at S.-">0 a.m., whpii everything came to a standstill. The changeover to the Waitaki supply was made as quickly as possible, and at fl.lii a.m. lights came on again in the city, and trams resinned running.
