VACUUMING THE SEA.

The largest dredge ship in the world has been put into service for the United States War Department. It is a vessel 476 ft long, with a displacement of 15,500 tons. Actually it is a giant vacuum cleaner. It sucks up silt and sand from the bed of a channel and pumps it into bins inside the ship's hull. When fully loaded the dredger steaine to sea, motor operated gates are opened and the whole load dumped into the ocean. The dredger has started a twoyear job of removing 15,000,000 cubic yards of silt from one of the channels in Xew York Harbour.
