WON OVER £21,000.

TAKANINI HORSES.

THIS SEASON'S EARNINGS.

F. SMITH LEADING TRAINER. Excellent progress ie again being made during the current season by Takaninitrained horses, and up to and including the recent Te Aroha meeting the district had won over 60 races, there being 103 minor plaeings and £21,215 in stakes. At the moment it appears that F. Smith and H. Gray will have an interesting duel for honours among the trainers, as both have large-sized teams in commission.

F. Smith has saddled up 18 winners and has had 32 plaeings and his team has earned so far £8285 in stakes, this amount representing 14 stake-earners, while with a similar number of horses Gray's team has amassed £4989 in stakes as a result of 17 wins and 2a plaeings. VVith only one winner separating these trainers, the position is very interesting. Next on the list comes E. Pope, who has a smaller team than usual this season, but his six representatives have won eight races, gained 15 and earned £3053 in stakes. Until relinquishing his position as private trainer to Hon. E. R. Davis and Mr. O. Nicholson, T. F. Vomer had done fairly well in winning seven events, while six minor plncings brought his tally in stakes to £1756. W. Clifton, D. J. Burgess and J. Cruse have each prepared two winners, while J. IT. Wallace, R. J. Miller, A. Walker, L. G. Abel and M. Marinovich are represented by one winner. The Herries Memorial Cup winner, Cillas, is not to race again in the Dominion, and lie ie to be shipped to India j by the fiiTst available steamer. Cillas' efforts for hie new owner in winning two richly-endowed races has contributed largely to the purchase price given after the Christmas meeting, and he will need only to land in India in good condition to prove a bargain to Mr. Higgins. It seems a pity that Cillas struck form late in the season, as it is obvious that some of the three-year-oUle. who proved hie master in the spring and summer, would have had a much harder task to have defeated him in hie present form. Cillae has won £2000 this season. Pleasing Performance. Although Orelio'e future tasks in handicap company are not likely to be easy owing to hie position in the handicaps, he recorded a pleasing performance in the President's Cup at Te Aroha to defeat all but Foxsen, an indication that he is anything but a spent light. Orclio has made hie mark in handicap company this season, and the fact that 'he lias won £3890 in stakes entitles him to high place among Dominion performers. Orrlio was a 1000pruinea purchase ae a yearling, but it seems that he has proved a sound investment. Left entire, Orelio may have further value as a sire when his racing days are over, more especially in view of the fact that he is one of the last of the Liniond line, and is by a sire whose eons are making their mark in this capacity in Australia and aleo in this Dominion.

One of the most consistent Tiandicappors in Cornieh has enjoyed a brief let up, but Trill again be seen out in the autumn. Cornish this season has earned £'2?>&0 for _ his owner, and the Foxbridpo Holding looks certain to extend his record before the season ie very much further advanced. He is one of the hardy Foxbridpe type, wlio seem to thrive on raeiiiß. and 'he has maintained his bright appearance throughout an extensive campaign among the handicappers. Bronwen raced only once at Te Aroha for a third to Suleiman and Rex MaitJand in the open sprint on the first day. Actually, thie ie the first time Bronwen has succeeded in earning a stake outside Ellerelie and Avondale, but the merit of her performance suggested that she wj]l take a prominent part in the decision of her autumn engagement*. Bronwen is another good stake-earner-, having won £3515. If she maintains her present form it is apparent that her record will 'be further extended.

Change of Stables. Riotous, who joined D. J. Burgees' etable after the completion of the Te Aroha meeting, looks little the worse for his exertions, and thie jumper may prove an acquisition to the local jumping brigade, of whom there are not a great many offering in this centre. Jt ie as a steeplechaser that Riotous has recorded his best performances, and he will have his opportunity in the near future, as in all probability he will contest the cross-country races at the forthcoming Ohinemuri Jockey Club's meeting. Dinky Di was handed over to J. F. Tutchen during the racing at Te Aroha. Formerly trained by H. Gray, Dinky Di proved a speedy sprinter, and he should be of further good eervice to his owner. Dinky Di'e place in H. Gray's etable has been taken by Kinvara, a filly who has shown considerable promise at recent meetings. Kinvara was brought back by Gray from the Te Aroha meeting. Route March's future progress will be of great interest in view of the fact that the champion colt will be a contender for honours in the Champagne Stakes at the Auckland Easter meeting if all goes ■well with him in the interim. Route March suffered an injury while running in the paddock after the Christmas meeting, this causing a longer spell than was otherwise intended. He has been sprinted on a couple of occasions recently, and while his former dash was not in evidence he has improved with, each gallop, and has only to make the expected headway in the meantime to run prominently in the autumn.
