DANGER TO LIFE.

MALICIOUS ALARMS.

FIRE BOARD'S CONCERN.

The opinion that the punishment meted out to offenders convicted of malicious false fire alarms was inadequate was expressed at to-day's meeting of the Auckland Metropolitan Fire Board. The superintendent's report stated that during the month there had been five such alarms. In one case a conviction was secured and a fine of £5 imposed, with 13/ costs.

The board decided to reward the informant in the prosecution with a cheque for £2 2/.

Captain R. S. Judson, V.C., said that the punishments in such cases were inadequate. People who gave malicious tiro alarms were needlessly risking life and causing ratepayers to incur additional expense. The fines imposed failed to act as a deterrent, and he was of the opinion that a term of imprisonment should be imposed.

The chairman. Mr. ,T. ,T. Kingston, said that the board had repeatedly asked for greater penalties. According to the secretary, Mr. P. Butler, magistrates had the power to impose lines of JCoO and up to a month's 1111 prisomnent.

It was decided to support the action taken bv the Fire Officers' Association in pressing for higher penalties on offenders.
