OVERSEAS BALLOT.

TERRITORIAL DUTY.

DISCHARGES AFTER CAMP.

Territorials in camp who are called in the overseas ballot which has been drawn but not yet published will not be entitled to be discharged from the Territorial Force until after the completion of their training period. This replaces the procedure adopted in the case of the first ballot for overseas service, wherein a territorial in camp could apply for his discharge forthwith on being notified that he had been drawn in the ballot for service in the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force.

The procedure to be followed in future is that, on completion «of his training period, a territorial drawn in an overseas ballot is to be transferred to what is known us an area pool and if necessary he is to be medically examined to the standard of the Expeditionary Force to ascertain whether he is grade 1.

Provided that he is eligible, that is, that no appeal against overseas service has been lodged on his behalf or lie is not held back by decision of the appeal board, the man can be discharged from the Territorial Force on being posted to the Expeditionary Force. The same course is to be followed in rcspcct to a Territorial not in camp, irrespective of whether he has commenced or completed his training.

Men drawn in next week's ballot, which is to be known as "No. 4 Ballot (Expeditionary Force)," will receive with their calling-up notice from the National Service Department a notice from the Air Department inviting applications for service in the Air Force. Such applications are to be made within «even days of the receipt of the ballot notice. On the Army Department being notified that a man has volunteered for the Air Force his medical examination will be deferred. Once a man has joined the Expeditionary Force he will not be released for the Air Force. The instructions as to the ballot state that the applications for the navy are being called by advertisement and not by notice as in the case of the Air Force.
