"TRUE TO FORM."
Praise For Australians' Fighting Qualities.
AMERICAN COMMENTS
Reed. 9.30 a.m.) NEW YORK, Feb. 25.
The "Herald-Tribune," in an editorial, says: "This war may not be exactly like the last war, but the 'Aussies' arc certainly true to form. When they landed at Singapore they drowned the band until it played 'Roll Out the Barrel.' "The Australian style of going to war is very like the American. It is the 'what the hell?' style. A French general once described it: 'It is as if they were going to a fete.' "There is no translation possible of 'La Gloire' into Australian, but if the Cockney dialect of Sydney is of no use for literal translation of the word it well knows what it means, as Libya has shown and Singapore will show if need be." A message from Ottawa says the Conservative party leader, Mr. R. B. Hanson, in an attack on the Canadian Government, said Australia's war effort was much greater proportion* ately than Canada's. He instanced the achievements of the Royal Australian Air Force and the Royal Australian Navy, which, he asserted,, showed the discrepancy between the efforts of the sister Dominions. "Moderate participation in conflict has never been the policy of Australia," he said. "That is why she is doing so well to-day. She is well under way. Mr. Hanson expressed the highest praise for Australia's army, which had proved "the striking power of the Empire." "I heartily congratulate her," he added.
