NEW LYNN COUNCIL. I ' The deputy-Mayor. Mr. J. S. Akehurst. pre- I sided at the monthly meeting of the New Lynn Borough Oounr.ll Inst evening. I Water Meters.—The town clerk reported that it was possible, under the present by-laws, to -harge water consumers for new meters supplied. The council resolved that nil people rcQuiring new - ; connections after February 1 be required to pay £4 for a new meter, those renting meters be given the option of purchasing them at £4 less need replacing the owner be required to purchase h meter. AH meters are to be guaranteed for 10 years by Ihe council. The council will continue ■ to be responsible for maintenance of meters. Town Planning.—An application was received 1 from Mr. K. McLachlan to build a garage at the , i-idc of his house and which would occupy the fWI width of the side yard The council decided that, in this case and similar circumstances, the uuildir.g inspector be authorised to issue a permit on the condition that the other side yard i≤ kept free ol obstructions of all kinds. If this condition Is contravened, the council has the right to remove the obstruction without incurring liability. Call Money.—The town clerk reported that arrangements had been made to cover the council's overdraft with call money. Power Shut Down.—Correspondnece was received from the manager. Waltemata Electric Power Board. Intimating that all electricity for street lighting and pumping would be oft between the lours of 11 p.m. on February 26 and 4 a.m. on February 27. Transfer of Dressing Sheds.—The Lynndale Amateur Athletic Club wrote seeking permission to transfer the dressing sheds on to the New Lynn Domain. Permission was granted on terms to be arranged with the town clerk and engineer. ONEHUNGA COUNCIL. Thr monthly meeting of the Onchunga Borough I Council was held last evening, the Mayor. Mr. 1 A. Ciarside. presiding. | Scholarship.—The Auckland University College 1 advised that the council scholarship for 1940 had been awarded to George Melville Simpson, of the Auckland Grammar School. The council decided to send a letter of congratulation to the winner. Swimming Competitions.^ - The Newmarket Counoil invited the Mayor, town clerk and councillors to cater for the swimming contests to be held { during the Municipal Conference. The Mayor and town clerk announced their intention of competing. Termite Inspector.—Mr. A. J. Black was appointed to this position. The Minister of Housing staged that owners of buildings found to be infected might be required to remove and destroy affected parts. If the owner failed to carry out the work the council might do so at» the owner's expense. The expense incurred might be borrowed from the State Advances Corporation. Bowliar Sreen. —It was decided to advertise for applicators to lease the new bowling green for a 21 years. _ , PAPAKUKA COUNCIL. The fortnightly meeting of the Papakura Borough Council was held last evening the Mayor, Mr. S. Evans, presiding. Grass Fire Dangers.—A property owner In Green Street drew the council's attention to the danger of a grass fire on an unoccupied council section. It was decided to call tenders for grazing on the section.
1 Maternity Hospital.—The investigations by the I Auckland Hospital Board into subsidising a \ maternity home for Papakura were advanced a stage further by the board requesting the council to arrange for last year's balance-sneet and the books of the hospital to be forwarded for inspection.
Permission to Charge.—Permission was given the Amateur Athletic Club to make a charge at the gates on the occasion of the south suburban competitions to be held at Prince Edward Park. The Home Guard. —free use of Prince Edward Park and the floodlights on Monday evenings was given to the Home Guard. Highway Money Transfer.—Approval of the transfer of £110 from the Papakura-Kawakawa main highway for expenditure on the PapakuraHunua and Papakura-Titl main highway was given by the No. 2 District Highway Council. No Sextons Available. —A request that the borough should take a lead in providing one of its sextons to dig graves for burials in the small cemeteries in the Papakura. district was received from the Auckland Funeral Directors - Association. The council decided to reply that as the cemeteries involved were at Wiri, Alfriston and Clevedon and not in the Papakura district, representations should be mads to the Health Department to get the Manukau County to provide the requested Sealing Subsidy.—The board* representative on the No. 2 District Highways Council. Mr. F. S. Dyson, advised that he could not approve a subsidy re re-sealing footpaths on the Auckland-Hamilton highway (Papakura). as there was no vote on this years estimates for the. *ork. bat eu»geet«d that the council make an application tot the subsidy next year.
