HIT BY WAR.
WOMEN ASSISTED. With the limelight on the thousands of refugees from .Nazi occupied lands who have sought safety in England during the ]>ast months, it is easy to lose sight of the sufferings of sonic of our own countrywomen, states an English writer. There are many who have lost their peace-time work and are in urgent need of Help; or it may be that the war has hit them in other ways. Be their trouble what it may, an excellent service is carried on on their behalf by a group of people at the Westminster War Work room, London. This group of workers wants wider support so that they may continue and extend their employment. At present they are supplying material and paying union rates to women for making 'garments for the wivee and families of servicemen. But such work can only be .given, with profit to the workers,to those who have their own sewing machines or are lent machines. With them, they can earn good money. The committee of the workroom group takes no payment for the garments made. Miss N"aomi Jacob, the popular novelist, is interesting herself in the service. She visited the workroom the other day to talk about ite opportunities and the need for the relief it is giving. She told of one woman who was almost starving when the committee found and helped her. Another, who was almost destitute, made the workroom's first pair of pyjamas by hand. Then a friend lent her a machine, and now she is doiii" quite well. e
