THEIR ORIGINS.
The origins of successful authors are diverse. Mr. P. G. Wodehouse was a clerk in a bank, as several of his stories illustrate. Mr. Somerset Maugham was a medical student at St. Thomas'. Hospital and graduated ae a doctor. Mr. John Dnnkwater and Mr. Eden PMllpotts were in insurance companies. Mr. Frederick Lonsdale was a seaman ■before the mast. Mr. Robert Hicihene originally resolved to be a musician, and studied both at Bristol and the Royal College of Music. Mr. Thomas Hardy was an architect. Mr. H. G. Welle, the son of a professional cricketer, was educated at the Royal College of Science, and secured first-clae* honours in zoology.
