WINS ROYAL STAKES.

IN RECORD TIME. PIRATE KING THE SPRINT. fv'oiite .Mauli established li claim to bciiiiJ: the DcbC two-year-old Ln the Uoiniiiioii when ho took t.he Royal Stakoi at Jillerslii ;, estenluv, leading practically ail the way u> run the mx furlongs in 1.12, which equalled High. Caste's race record mlic'h he won the event in 193 U. Kraaj, who has raced inoet connistei'tly tins season in hack company, came on to be second two lengths and a half away, while .['ay Roll, the favourite, who had every wIIOW, was a neck away third, with Sir licau fourth.

i'oieen put up her best effort to date when ehe won the Nathalie' Memorial Handicap, the chief event returning double figures. lirlick ran to 1 the front before the back stretch was reached and crossing the top was about half a dozen lengths clour of the Held, hie nearest attendants being Cornish and Gayest Son, who were followed by i'oxsen and GreekQueen. Erlick commenced to weaken before the straight was reached and was jiiwt ahead of Cornish and Gayest Son. The last two headed Erlick, and half way down Foiiiseii and Greek Queen joined i*>ue tho four righting out a good , finish in which h'oxßca got the verdict by a neck, ■with Cornish a head away and Gayest •Son fourth. The Clifford Plate attracted three runners—Beau Vite, Koyal Chief and Kathbella —and though it wae run over a mile and a quarter it developed into a sprint tlovvn the straight. Beau Vite went to the front going out of the straight and he set a very slow pace, the trio only cantering. Once in line Royal Chief challenged on the outside and Kathbella came on the ineide, but when A. E. Ellis called on Beau Vite he held off hie opponents to ecore comfortably by a neck from Royal Chief (who was hard ridden) with Kathbella length away. The Bowen Handica-p, the open eprint, was spoiled by a bad start only the four horses that filled the firet four places getting away properly, the others having no chance. Pirate King and Lady Tinkle were first into the straight from Palustre and Mittie, with Kentucky heading the others. Pirate King finished on strongly to get the decision by two lengths and a half from Palustre, w<ho beat Lady Tinkle by a length and a half. Mittie wae fourth, with Gold Money Song, Dinky Di, Corato and Kentucky next. Ascot Bloom, who showed winning form at the previous Auckland meeting, accounted for the Grey Handicap, returning a nice price. The start waa not a good one, Night Pilot, Young Finance, Mies Valerie and Boy Lu getting away badly. Runanga was in charge wlien they eottled down and he led into the straight from Beegwing, Gay Rosette, Joan Peel, Ascot Bloom and Veyana, but in the run to the judge Aecot Bloom won by a neck from Gay Rosette, with Foxwood half a length away third. Joan Peel, Mendelssohn, Hackeneclimidt and Veyana were next. During the day the eurn of £77,488 was put through the totaliaator, compared with £71,776 10/ for the corresponding day last year, an increase of £5711 10/. This made a total for the meeting of £406,225, against £360,848 for the previous summer fixture, an increase of £30)377.
