NEW YEAR'S EVE.

SHOPS WILL CLOSE. HOLIDAY ATTRACTIONS. Aβ stated elsewhere in to-night's "Star," no "late night ,, will be observed to-night, New Year's Eve. The great majority of businesses will close this evening at 5.30 until Friday, on which day they will remain open until 0 p.m. Housewives should note that no bread will be baked for delivery tomorrow or on Thursday, and it will be necessary to purchase "sufficient to-day to last until Friday morning. The same applies to meat. As far as fruit shops are concerned, there is considerable latitude in regard to hours of business. Some will close early to-day in order that they may remain open on New Year's Day. Others ■will observe a late night to-night and remain closed to-morrow. All banks and offices of stock and station agents will be close to-morrow and on Thursday. Many sporting attractions will pro- i ■vide for the amusement of the public j over the Xew Year period. The principal attraction to-day is the third day's programme of the Auckland Trotting Club's summer meeting at Epsom. For bowlers there is the post-section play in the Auckland Bowling Centre's annual fours tourney on the Carlton green. To-morrow, Xew Year's Day, and the following day the Auckland Racing Club will continue its summer meeting at Ellerslie. Baseball matches will be played between Buckett's Gymnasium Baseball Clnb, the pioneer women's club in Canterbury, and Auckland teams at the Domain. An interesting event to-morrow will be the New Zealand Tourist Trophy motor cycle race on Waiheke Island. This race is organised by the Auckland Motor Cycle Club, and it will begin at Ostend shortly after the first boat arrives from Auckland and cover a 20-lap course. Excursions to the islands in the Hauralci Gulf and to various other scenic attractions have been arranged for holiday visiters. It fa thought that the New Year motor traffic—both from and to the city—will be heavier than usual There is also heavy railway traffic, thousands of people returning to their homes, both in Auckland and the country.
