OVERSEAS CARGO.
WATERSIDERS STOP WORK.
Owing to waterside worker* refusing to work after 11.45 p.m. on Saturday, 200 balee of wool and a parcel of milk powder, which were to have been loaded on a vessel in port, were left behind on the wat< rfront.
Rain commenced falling during the evening, but in the opinion of officials of the shipping company this was not sufficient to harm the cargo. The men werp informed that they should either start work and finish loading or else go bojic. The company considered that about one hour's loading was all that wa« required to complete the job. After a protest meeting called by the men, no agreement could etill be reached by the two parties and no further work w> done.
Rates of pay per hour on Saturday were about 3/ for work before midday, abou«r «i/llj for work between midday and 5 p.m., and 7/4$ for work after that.
