ACUTE CONGESTION.

ACTION IN AUCKLAND

that his Departmental odicers

ere *orv eoncerniMl about cori£re>tion at the Auckland railway «oot!s sho*ls. the Hon. D. O. Sullivan. Minister of Railways. said. 011 bis arrival in Auckland to-day. that steps were being taken to lessen the difficulties under which outward and inward pood- were handled. '"During the pa-t seven years the volume of outward poods forwaYded hv rail fiom Auckland in (he month of August has more than doubled.'' said the Minister. "In August, 1934. the freight amounted to 10.499 tons: in the same month in 10:57 the figures increased to 14,347 tons; and in August. 1940. the total soared to 21.5ti;i tons. The (■resent facilities for handling this increasing tradii* enable the loading and dispatch of 238 goods -wagons daily, and it has now been decided to build a new siding near the Goliath crane road to provide accommodation for an additional •'l2 wagons. "It is probable that part-time accom modation will be available on a portion of the crane road for a further 21 wagons. The space between the new siding and the crane road is to be concreted for the benefit of carrier-. These works will form part of the major scheme, at present in abeyance, for extensive additions and alterations to the outward goods shed and yard. "The position in regard to inward goods is also acute, and calls for immediate attention." concluded Mr. Sullivan. "The Department's officer- are now assembling the material required for an extension in steel and concrete of the inward shed. The dimensions of the extension will be 112 ft by 1014 ft. When this enlargement is completed it will be found. I think, that adequate accommodation will have been provided for Auckland's inward goods traffic for sonic years ahead."
