Golfing Prodigy
But for the war a Curtis Cup match I between the women golfers of England and America would have been played on one of the British links this autumn, and it is probably for that reason we have, been watching the progress of the United States women's championship with more than ordinary interest during the past few days, says our London correspondent. Unlike their British golfing sisters, we arc rather inclined to go on and on for ever, American girl stare come and go in the most unexpected manner, and 1 it was quite a surprise to read that Miss Betty Jameson had carried off the title for the second year in succession. She is the first player to do so since Miss Virginia Van Wie. American women's golf, in fact, is full of new names since a team last competed for our open title. This is partly explained by the fact that a number of their star players have recently turned professional, including "Hard-hit-ting" Hele-n Hicks, Miss Patty Berg and Miss Van Wie, but there seems to he no lack of newcomers to take their place. T have had plowing accounts of their latest "infant prodigy," 19-vear-old Klizabeth flicks, a tiny girl of little more t ban fiv<\ feet high and weighing less than eicrht stone. She made all the seaMined players in the States sit up during t lie winter round of tournaments, and oven reoorded one victory over Miss Jameson herse.lf. Tn spite of her tiny stature she hits a mighty ball and is deadly on the greens
