FIRES STARTED.
RAIDS BY THE R.A.F. Bombers Get Lucky "Break" At Mannheim. British Official Wireless. (Reed. 1 p.m.) RUGBY, Dec. 12. After struggling through cold and cloudy weather, British heavy bombers had the luck they deserved ■when they reached Mannheim last night.
For several hours, states the Air Ministry news service, they had flown in thick cloud with no sign of the ground, but when tht'V hud utmost arrived at Mannheim there was a midden clearing nnd the Rhine lay bright below them. The pilots picked out tlie power station, which wan the niitin objective of the night's raids. Sticks of bombs and many Incendiaries were dropped. Immediately Arcs broke out and they were still burning when the aircraft left.
Other bombers made earlier attacks on the railway and sidings behind the river in good weather. Several flres were started and these eventually reached material which exploded with great force. The inland harbour at Mannheim was also raided and docks at Calais, Boulogne and Naples were severely hit during the night.
