MINISTER INSPECTS.
MINESWEEPING FLEET.
After insjiectiiig tin* Naval Base. lJcvmijiort. on his arrival from Wellington this morning, the Mini>tcr of Defence. the Hon. K. .font's. expressed appreciation of what lie termed the splendid work that wan Demg done. He said the navy had been enabled to tindertake work of a character never previously earried out at tlx' base. He balanced major refits of the Achilles and Leander and the fitting out of the Monowal.
The Minister said that fine work was being done in respect to com ci ting iishii;g boalis and small coastal cargo vessels into inine-sweepers, and with the const ruction of sweepers, the engines for which had been taken from other ships. He considered that when the work was completed New Zealand would hav« a mine-sweeping fleet able to operate efficiently throughout New Zealand waters.
