TAMAKI CLUB.

ninety entries.

PROVINCIAL CUP TRIALS. (By SPEEDWELL ) HIGH WATER. At Auckland - Saturday 700 a.m. 7.19 p m At Onehunsa— 745 " " 800 Pm ' Saturday 10.37 am. 10.56 p.m. Ihi-ie arc only two c lul> events tonii.rn.u, the Tainaki Yacht Club's laces tor classes J'-'tt and under, f«.i- which entries lia\e been received, and the Heine Bay Club's race for the Silver J'et ns. ] hat cash prizes, even it small, are popular, is shown by the excellent entries which the Tamaki Club has recei\ei| for its first series of races under this principle for some years. Another liictor affecting entries is the popularity ot this dubs courses. They are laid in the \\ iiU'st part of the harbour, away Jiom all traffic, wharves and strong tidal eltects. and so •_.i\e a true test on all I'oints nl sailing, lai ts which keen yaclitsquick 1,, lealise. The „nly drawback is t lie distaiii e in travel, but later starts equalise matters in this resj ect. A lot of interest will centre to-morrow "i the trials for the Sanders and Con,well < Hps. I lie Sanders Cup trial, which is controlled solely by the contest committee will start at 2.:i(l p.m. off the Tamaki clubhouse, tin* course lu'inir fi\«m 1 by the committee. A handicap race for the cup boats only will be held by the club at the same time. The boats in tlx- trial Mill be ( aresH. Davina. Aileen, Endeavour ami Kia Or a.

1 he trials are run on tlie points system similar to that used in tlie ]S-footeis contest two yea is ayo, when thre<* Sydney boats t oinjieted. r \ he first boat in scores points, the second boat 31 points, third l.» points, lourth 7 points, fifth 3 points ami sixth I point. Hy this method there can be no dead-heats on points and a win scores I point more than two seconds, which is a just recognition of a win and better than some systems by which tx\o seconds store higher than a first and a third.

-A similar system lias been used in Wellington for the Campbell Cup in the .lellicoe class championship of tlie province, which is held each year, taking the place of the local trials for the Sanders ('up. the winner of the championship being automatically chosen as the representative of Wellington at, the provincial contest.

This procedure was adopted here for the first time last season to decide the holder of a trophy presented to the association li.v the Auckland section of the blaster Mariners' Company, tin- trophy being nainecl after the late Admiral of the Fleet Lord •Jellicoe. It is now held I>> W. Holers' Caress and present indications point to her retaining it for at least another 12 months.

The position in the Cornwell Cup contest uas changed last Saturday. In the previous four races T. Lennon and .1. Tupp scofd two wins each. A win by either of these two skippers last week would have ended the trials, hut a third skipper, K. Hoyd. won. making the choice very open, and to-morrow's race will be more interesting.
