CITIZEN'S DEATH.
MR. ERNEST A. CRAIG.
PROMINENT BUSINESS MAN,
The death has occurred at tlie age of CM years of Mr. Krnest Arthur Craig, a * cry well known Auckland rpsident and a niemlx'r of a family which has taken a prominent part in Auckland life for nearly a centurv.
Mr. Craig was born in Auckland in 1N74. His father established the firm of J. J. Craig, Limited, carrying contractors, and Mr. Craig held tbe position of managing director for some vears. Later, together with his brother, Mr. Herliert Craig, he founded the firm of Ernest and Herbert Craig. Limited, carriers and shipping agents. During the great strike of HI 13, he held the position of president of New Zealand Kinplovers' Association. Mr. Craig Iviul also occupied the important posts of president of tlie Auckland Master Carrierw' Association and president of the New Zealand Carriers' Federation. He was Consul in Auckland for Chile from UlUi until his resignation in 1!I.'I2.
After the outbreak of the Great War, Mr. Craig was appointed treasurer of the Auckland Patriotic Association and he remained in this position until the time of his death. He pave long service as a justice of the peace, 'being on the active list for 25
years, when he was made a life member of the Auckland Justices' of the Peace Association. A. member of the One Tree Hill Road Board for some years, Mr. Craig held the office of chairman for a term.
Mr, Craig took a great interest in many branches of sport. In his youth he was an enthusiastic cricketer and horseman. He was also keenly interested in athletics. A life member of th» Northern Boxing Association, he held executive office as president for a number of years.
Well known in Auckland bowling circles and a foundation member of the F.psom Bowling Club, Mr. Craig was elected president of the club for two terms and held office in the same capacity in the Auckland Bowling (Tub. Before bhe formation of the New Zealand Bowling Association, he ww the last chairman of the Northern Bowling Association, and became the first president of the Auckland Centre when the former body was constituted.
The loss of Mr. Craig will he felt deeply not only in many sporting circles, but also in business and local body and judicial associations. He is survived by his wife, one son and a daughter.
