IN TASMAN SEA. WELL-KNOWN OFFICER. The chief engineer 0,1 t.s.s. Maimoa. re]«>rted sunk by the raider off the Australian coast, was Mr. Oliver Walker, who went through the last war on Bueknell Line without l>eing involved in any sea casualty, but who has liad exciting experiences, in the present war. He was chief engineer on t.is.s. Tairoa "when the vessel was .sunk liny the (oaf Sjvee. and was a |>ri-oner on board the (Jraf Sj>ce "hen that battleship was run to shore in a crippled state in the River Plate battle. After liberation on the <!raf Spee seeking shelter at Monte Video. Air. Walker returned to his home at Ilford. where his wife and daughter reside, and he appeared in the tihn "For Freedom," which recorded the Plato battle.
He i* very well known in Kew Zealand and Australian shipping circles, having traded here in the Shaw. Savill and Albion Company's vessels for the la.st twenty years. and is a member of the Masonic Lodge in Wellington. Xo word has vet been heard whether or not he i-; a prisoner of war.
