PRISONERS SENTENCED. It would be held in hi- fa \ our that the prisoner had volunteered for service and had been found medically unfit, tmt the least sentence that could be ini|xised was one of nine months' imprisonment. A similar plea that drink wa«s the cau-e of his downfall, and that a prohibition order for life would l>e for his pood, was made by John Tai Raymond (•>•>). who admitted breaking, entering and theft at Te Puke. His Honor replied that the Probation Officer's report definitely stated that pri.-oiier was idle and dishonest and was looked upon with fear by Maoris and pakehas because of his tendency to violence. In Mich circumstances, and with a type of crime that must always be met by an exemplary sentence, the lea-t sentence that could be imposed was IS months' hard labour.
