The new month has opened up with good trading conditions, both in the tobacco and the general sections, according to the latest reports received from wholesale grocery merchants. New tobacco deliveries were particularly heavy and are still being maintained, although, of course, at the moment, only fill-in business ie being received, most retailers holding off with their main orders for the mid-month deliveries, which will be made next week.

Vinegar.—Arrangements have been made for a well-known brand of vinegar, packed in quarts, half gallons and bulk, to be offered on a freight paid basis to any railway station in the Auckland province, pro;i) a minimum parcel of five hundredweight is ordered. Aβ this arrangement includes the free return of empties, it will no doubt have a very, big appeal to the vast majority of country stores, even though a 'plusage on the f.o.b. price of 4d per gallon for bulk and 1/6 per dozen for quarts is charged. Tobacco.—Advice has been received from the manufacturers that several well-known brands of plug tobacco have now been withdrawn.

Cigarettes.—When present stocks of tin are exhausted, the only packing of cigarettes which will be available for a number of well-known brande are the 10s packets. A well-known brand of cigarettes retailing at 9d per packet, previously manufactured in England, will shortly be manufactured here, and the local packing is expected to be available early this month.

Kraft Paper.—A substantial increaee of £11 17/6 a ton has been advised in the price of local kraft paper and £9 17/6 a ton for cap paper. Meantime the flats i»f kraft paper have been withdrawn, and only the rolls are available at the moment.

Ointments. —Two well-known brands of ointments, which have been in short supply for some time, are now available. Salmon.—Merchants' stocks of salmon are now feeling the full effects of the import prohibition which has been in force for some time, with the result that some grades are already sold up and others are becoming in very short supply. Price Alterations.—The Price Investigation Tribunal has this week authorised new selling rates for kraft paper, cap paper, golden grade pineapple l's and %'s, English Epsom salts in loz packets, a wellknown brand of packet cornflour in lib cartons, and a well-known brand of pities. Arrivals to hand from overseas and coastal ports comprise the following shipments:—Crown rice, canned fruit, muscatel raisins, patent medicines, split peas and i>earl barley, breakfast foode, salt, etc., etc. WHOLESALE CURRENT PRICES.
