r — • [ BRITISH CHILDREN. J BALLOT HELD TO-DAY. t Forty British children, boys and girls, 1 whose ages range from five years to 15 1 years, reached Auckland yesterday, and r were met by the Mayor of Auckland, who is also chairman of the Auckland i Provincial Patriotic Council, Sir Ernest !. Davis, the following representatives jr of the Auckland Committee, the Rev. T. Halliday, Mrs. W. R. Wilson, and the hon. secretary, Mr. Stuart Garland, and Mr. J. S. Cupit and Miss K. Stewart, representing the Child Welfare Department. The children had been accompanied from Wellington by Mr. J. R. McClune, superintendent of the Child Welfare Department at Wellington, and escorts. Sir Ernest Davis had arranged for a bus and tlie children were taken to temporary accommodation in the suburbs. Nineteen of the children had been r nominated for private homes, leaving 21 to be placed. Owing to that small numj ber, it was necessary to ballot this morning for their reception in private , homes which have already been visited by members of the committee. e
