POLICE PRECAUTION.
CAR RENDERED USELESS.
A sidelight upon the week-end search for the. escaped prisoners, au.J a storv which indicates the completeness of the precautions taken by the polit-e. w ;ii . told this morning by two tramped whose roi:te led theni through t lie area under patrol after dark last evening. Their first indication that the locale of the search had moved to their vicinitv was gained in the lower Xihotapu vallev when, early in the evening, they unexpectedly stopped by three members of the police party, who had made thv-ir headquarters in a disused hut.
Resuming their journey in the dark, they continued on to the Scenic Drive, where theJr car had been parked since early morning. After being stopped bv two more police parties, the drher replaced a part taken from the engine and pushed the self-starter, but the eii2ine failed to respond.
Investigation showed that the coil h;i<l l>eon removed in their absence. Subsequent inquiries revealed the fact thai this was not another case of petty thieving. for when the matter was rejiorter] the police passed over the. coil whi<-".i they themselves had removed in order to render the car useless.
The trampc-rs added that the departure of the car seemed to remove one potential worry from the minds of the police.
