FOOD MACHINERY. No Shortage Of Supplies In London. British Official Wireless. (Reed. 10 a.m.) RUGBY, Oct. 4. German propagandists are spreading reports throughout occupied countries that the London food situation machinery has broken down. The purpose of these reports is somewhat obscurc unless it is an endeavour to discount the Nazis' own inability or refusal to carry out equitable food distribution for the populations for which they are responsible. In fact there is no shortage of most food and none of essentials in London shops. So true is this that those persons whose ordinary shops at which they registered have been bombed have been given "rover coupons" entitling them to draw on supplies at any other shop. Other supplies arc fully equal to the demand and also the meat ration was recently increased, showing that there is no difficulty about food distribution in London, which is the main target of Nazi terrorism. Stubborn Horses. The thoroughness with which the German occupation authorities are exploiting conquered territories the German Armies have over-run and are impoverishing their resources even down to carrying off their beasts of burden for service in the Reich, is brought to light by stories telegraphed to the United States from Berlin, describing the difficulties of German farmers and soldiers in making French, Polish, Belgiau and Dut-ch horses respond to orders in German.
The Nazi Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animate—an organisation which is explained by the fact, which received publicity in the first year of the Nazi regime, that the suffering of the dumb part of creation does excite Hitler's pity—is reported to have advised drivers to spare the whip and use patience. Norway's Hard Master. It is reported from Berlin semi official quarters, says a cable message from Zurich, that a German trading company has purchased the greater part of Norway's winter food stocks for immediate delivery to Germany. Payment will be in Reich credit certificates.
