OBITUARY.

MR. ANDREW HESSER.

FORMER CITY TREASURER

The death occurred last evening of Mr. Andrew Messer, who retired from the position of treasurer of the Auckland City Council three years ago.

Mr'. Messer was bora'and -educated at Xewcastle-on-Tyne, England, and came to New Zealand in 1904. He joined the treasury department of the City Council in 1905, and later jjcas. promoted to the; position of chief clerk, a position which he'held, for 17 years. In 1922, when then-city treasurer, the late Mr. J. S. Brighamwas appointed town clerk, Mr. Messer was chosen to succeed him.

A highly -esteemed- member of the Auckland" Jewish community * arid a greatly respected • citizen' of '■ Auckland, Mr. Nathan Phillips, died at his home in Vermont Street, Ponsonby, aged 82. Mr.; Phillips,' who was born in Lithuania, wetn to England as •■«,■ young man, ..went to Sunderland: He arrived in Melbourne in 1887 and continued on to in 1894. For many years rlie was in.business as a> jeweller on the Cqromandel and Ohinemuri gold fields, later'opening in Auckland. , • - Mr- Phillips, \who was a fine Hebrew scholar, was closely associated with many activities in the Auckland Jewish community. He was for many years a member of the board of management of and vice-president of the Chevra Kadisha and Benevolent Society, and was an ardent Zionist. also founded the Auckland Hebrew Aid Society. He was a Freemason, a-member of Lodge United Service and the Masonic Club. Mr. Phillips, whose wife predeceased him, is survived by three sons and two daughters. There are three sraodciuldreß.
