SURPRISES IN SPRINT.
TE KAWITI SCORES.
OHINEMURI JOCKEY CLUB.
Miss Te Koura, who was second to Maxam on Saturday, paid the largest price at Paeroa .yesterday when the Ohinemuri Jockey Club concluded its spring meeting. Despite the fact that she was drawn eighth at the post in the Railway Handicap she quickly ran to the front with Brazen Bold, and the pair led round the turn from Llangollen, Maxam, Palustre and Valimeen. 'Miss Te Koura then drew away and stalling off a determined challenge by Llangollen won by a long neck, with Merry Vaals, who was purchased by Mr. E. Montgomery last week, half a length away third. Brazen Bold was fourth, with Maxam and Palustre next. The President's Handicap, the chief event, went to Te Kawiti, the favourite, who led all the way. Early he was attended by Pern, Sunola and Young Padf®" i , Kawiti was followed into the straight by Besiege, Sunny Downs, Esquire, y alaimto and Sunola, who had met with interference crossing the top. Te Kawiti went on to win by three-quarters of a length from Valamito, who beat Esquire by half a length. Pern, Plying Acre, Besiege and Sunola were next. The public stuck to Duvach, whom they made favourite for the Maiden Handicap on the first day, in which she finished third, _ again entrusting her with most money in the Novice Handicap, and she duly won. Heroic Star, who was making his first appearance, was in charge with three furlongs to go from Acre's Beauty, Duvach and Gay Rosette. When fairly in the straight Duvach had the measure of Heroic Star and beat him by half a length, with Gay Rosette threequarters of a length away. Radiant Bay, Marie's Choice and Kingcraft followed. [ There was a surprise in the Taumarunui Steeplechase when British Sovereign won and returned double figures. With a round to go Floodlight was in charge from Gar Vaals, Biform, British Sovereign and Maliala. Floodlight was attended into the straight by British Sovereign, Gar Vaals and Biform, and once over the last fence British Sovereign went on to win by two lengths from Floodlight, who beat Gar Yaals by three lengths. Biform was fourth, but was lame on returning to scale.
The final event, the Rotokohu Handicap, was, annexed by the favourite, Gold Money Song, who was slow away, and put up a good performance. He ran to the front crossing the top, and was first into the straight from Lord Waitangi, Karatoki and Cheval de Bataille. Gold Money Song held off Cheval de Bataille by two lengths, with Lord Waitangi, who had run second earlier in the day, half a length away. Then came Karatoki and Joy Vaals. During the day the sum of £23,920 was put through the machine, compared with £22,453 for the corresponding day last year, an increase of £1467. This made a total for the meeting of £61,430 10/, compared with £55,741 10/, an increase of £5689. • V Later results are:— ( PRESIDENT'S HANDICAP •( £258, nine tur-longs.—l-1 Te Kawiti. 8.9 (Wimlns), 1; 8-10 Valamito, 7-10, car. 7.13 (McTavlsh). 2; 5-4 Esquire, 7.2 (OUchrlst). 3.
