OBITUARY.
MR. W. NEWMAN. The death has occurred of Mr. William Newman, of Epsom, and formerly of Aratapu, Northern Wairoa. Mr. Newman was born at Devonport, spent most of his life at Aratapu, but on his retirement 16 years ago he came to live in Auckland. He was a member of the Epsom Bowling Club and the Royal [Society of St. George. He is survived by his wife and two sons, one of whom is with the Second Echelon.
MR. LEONARD S. SAWTELL. A well-known identity of Auckland in the person of Mr. Leonard Sefton Sawtell died suddenly while visiting the Point Chevalier fire station. Born in Cliristchurch 73 years ago, he was educated at Christ's College, his father being an original Canterbury settler and [Mayor of the Cathedral City for some period.
The late Mr. Sawtell was a wellknown traveller in the North Island in his earlier years. A keen and enthusiastic entertainer for all charitable benefits, his genial and kindly disposition will be missed by his many friends. He retired from the staff of P. Hayman and Company some years ago and was one of the original founders of the Canterbury Association in Auckland, being elected a life member.
In his earlier life Mr. Sawtell was a keen volunteer member of the Wellington Fire Brigade and always maintained a lively interest in brigade affairs. His sudden collapse is deeply regretted toy all 'brigadesmen. He is survived by his widow, three sons and three daughters.
