MERCHANT LOSSES.
Below Average For Previous 53 Weeks. NINE BRITISH BHIPS SUNK. British Official Wireless. (Reed. 11 a.m.) RUGBY, Sept. 24. Mercantile losses due to enemy action for the week ending September 15 were nine British vessels totalling 29,246 tons, four. Allies totalling 12,575 tons, three neutral totalling 7379 tons. Both the British and the total losses were below the average for the previous 53 weeks of 54,323 tons. German claims during the same period amount to 127,350 tone of merchant shipping sunk. German losses- captured, scuttled and sunk up to September 22 amount to approximately 1,043,000 tone and Italian to 291,000, a total of 1,334,000 tone. In addition some 33,000 tons of former neutral ships, which had been seized or brought under control by the enemy, have been sunk. The record iu long-term leases is held by the estate of Kingsfold, near Billingehurst, Sussex, w"hich, comprising 166 acres of land and a house, was let for 10,000 years, in the second year of James I v at a yearly rental of one red rose.
