LAWN TENNIS CLUBS.
OFFICIAL OPENINGS FOB 1940-41. Hallyburtoa Johntione.—The president. Mr. W. Rodweli welcomed the members and visitors. Mr. Harrison, who was accompanied by Mr. Williamson and Mr. Fernandez, all irom the A.L.T.A., addressed the gathering about the many helpful Intentions of the association for the forthcoming season, and hoped that the club would utilise these to the full. Mr. S. G. Crookbaln, vice-patron, said he was pleased to note the splendid way in which the ladies were rallying to the cause and keeping keen interest In the club, whilst many of their fellow Playe" were on military service. Men: Mr. Jack Llt«». of play which marked the opening day can be taken as indications of what are »f "« ™} e features of the new season, then the club should experience a most prosperous one. Sanft. the chairman and members ol UK w ' l "- stone Park Domain Board with their wives, and the A.L.T.A., which was represented by Mr. S. A deal, president, and Mr. Armitage. member cf the committee, and with them Mrs. Cleal and Mrs. Armitage. Mr. Sanft and Mr. deal ex""*" 1 good wishes for a prosperous season, and Mr oicai conveyed the official message of the A.L.T.A.. •Carry on.- Mr. A. W. Roberts, president of the Mount Roskill Club, offered the congratulations of his club to Winstone Park on winning the Johns Shield. This trophy is competed for annually and since its Inception has been held by only two clubs until that run was broken in 1939-40 by Winstone Park. Mr. C. B. McCullough chairman of the Domain Board, was the final speaker, and he. too, stressed the necessity for club activities being carried on to the fu.lest extent possible during the war. After the first ball had been driven by Mrs. Valentine the courts were officially declared open for the season 1940-41. The final item on the programme was the annual match between the members of the Domain Board and the club, and it resulted in a win for the Domain Board, 6—4, 6 —t.
