BLED TO DEATH.

STREET KNIFE CLASH. TWO MEN WOUNDED. (By Air.) SYDNEY, September 14. A man was killed and two others wore injured when a kife was used in a clash in William Street, City, last night. James Thomas White. 51, of St. John's Road, Glebe, bled to death in a few minutes. A wound in his throat extended from the left ear to the windpipe, which was severed. Injured are: Leo Costello, 40, of St. John's Road, Glebe, and William irwin, 39, of Albion Street, Surry Hills. Irwin suffered a deep gash across the mouth, two superficial wounds in the back, and his left eye-tooth was broken. Four stitches were inserted in the mouth wound. Costello suffered a deep incised wound in the throat, in which two stitche* were inserted, and a gashed left ear. According to a- story told the police, a quarrel started in a wine saloon in William Street, near Bourke Street. The argument was continued in the street shortly before 7 p.m., when White and another man began fighting. Costello, who was White's friend, went to his assistance. Irwin, a returned soldier, knew none of the combatants. He said: "I went in on the eide of the smaller mail. "I dived at the bigger man's legs and brought him dow.. "He was too powerful for me to hold, and we got to our feet again. "I received a blow on the mouth. I thought it was a punch. I did not know I had been slashed." Constable Baldwin, of Darlinghurst, and the Central District Ambulance' found White lying dead face down in a pool of blood. Blood was also splashed on a shop window. Costello and Irwin were sta<™-erin<* about the footpath. eo ° White and the injured men were taken to the Sydney Hospital. Later, the detectives asked a man to accompany them to Darlinghurst i>oliee station, where he was charged with J murder.
