He was always fairly prominent, and just when Expellant looked the winner he came with a great, run on the outride to beat Expellant narrowly. Rara Avis looked likely half a furlong from home, but could not quite see it out. Venture and Glen Council had every show, but weakened over the last bit. Venture, who drew the inside, jumped away smartly and led early from Air Port, Rara Avis, Expellant, Aguila, Glen Connell and Foxola. Expellant then ran to the front and was followed across the top by Glen Council, Venture, Air Port, Rara Avis, Foxola and Aguila. Glen Connell was in front at the home turn with Expellant, the pair being followed by Venture. Aguila, Air Port and Rara Avis. A furlong from the post Glen Connell and Expellant were fighting it out when Rara Avis joined in. Glen Connell dropped back, and the. two others were having a great struggle when Aguila came with a fast run on the outside to win by half a length from Expellant; with Rani Avis three-quarters of a length away. Venture was fonrth. followed by Rev Ln. Foxola, Air Port and Village Green. Favourite Wins. Monte Cristo. who won at To Rapa in May, and in his next start was placed at the. Pakuranga meeting, accounted for the Henderson Handicap easily. He waited on the leaders to the turn, and came through about half-way down, and, stalling off a. challenge bv Chain Acre, scored decisively. Chain Acre, who wa* making his first appearance this season, won at Pukekohc last term and was placed later on. He is 1 only a three-year-old, and looks like " turning out more than useful.
