CORRESPONDENTS' VIEWS.

I TAXATION AND THE FARMER. (To the Editor.) •We have had two very bad years on I the farm, averaging a loss of £20. Du r . j ing this time we have had to pay £13 j n 'social security tax—llo sustenance for |us either. To provide my coming babe with clothes I had to go to work. Doing (two jobs at that time was too much for me and' I finished up in bed. un< j cr doctor's care, but not before I had provided for the. child. This May when the women's tax fell due I had not ono penny in my purse and had to applv for exemption. This was not granted me—only an extension of time. My husband cannot 50 out to work in winter or spring. Most of the winter he has been lo miles away earing for his stock. I wrote to our local member, a Cabinet Minister, putting the jCa«=e fully before him and protesting at the taxation when we haven't earned enough for a bare living and about not petting exemption. He ignored mv first protest., and said the 5/ was too small a sum to bother about. In spite of the fact that I am once more expectiiig, I have had to milk a cow, feed pi»s and other -animals because my husband has had to be away on the other place. I have been run down and ill enough to have been ordered complete rest bv the doctor. I have a young child to care for and I havo had personally to earn that .V. The Government extorts this from me, although I luivcift monov to buy medicine, and for the past three years, have had an average of £1 1/ a year to spend on my clothes—mostlv cheap shoes.
