LIQUOR AFTER HOURS,

LICENSEE AND BARMAN FINED.

On a charge of selling liquor after hours, on August 20, Xelsou Samuel Frascr, licensee of the Victoria Hotel, was fined £7 10/ in the Policc Court by Mr. F. 11. Levicn, S.M., yesterday afternoon. A barman, James Garden Stephens, wafi fined £4 on a charge of supplying liquor. Mr. Bruce Elliot represented both defendants, who pleaded not guilty. The licensee also denied charges of opening for the purpose of selling liquor and exposing liquor for sale. The magistrate said there was no evidence before him to support these charges and at his suggestion they were witli-i drawn by the police. A soldier, aged 20, who pleaded guilt}' to a charge of being unlawfully on the premises after hours, was fined .€l. | Concerning the charge upon which the licensee a™i barman were fined, and referring to the evidence given by the soldier, who said he was given the number of a room and was supplied with liquor in the hotel when re lia-1 no intention of staying the night, Mr.! Levien sai<l: "This is a specious method, or subterfuge, whereby soldiers, sailors and others are enabled to put forward some excuse for being on the premises and buying liquor after hours."
