WEEK'S WORK
THE FLOWER GARDEN Give kniphopits their annual trimming up, to make them tidy before they commence growing. Increase chrysanthemum* hy suckers. Select suckers of medium vigour; those on the . outside of the clump are usually the best. Gladioli can be planted in prepared ground. Heavy soils should have sand or leaf soil added ttf render them more porous* Delphiniums can be increased by taking off young shoots. These Should be cut away just below the surface soil. Plant perennial phloxes in soil that has been well trenched and manured. Dahlias can be divided and planted. The stools' will be showing buds now, and should be divided so as to allow one bud to at least one tuber. Tuberous begonias required for summer bedding should be started now. They can be placed in boxes on a greenhouse shelf, or is a cold frame. Sow seed of Geum Mrs. Bradshaw, and so obtain plants for filling beds or planting groups in the border in autumn. Prune buddleias, of the variabilis type, back to within a few buds of the old wood. th£ VEGETABLE GARDEN Sow seed of parsnips. These revel in a soil that has been deeply worked. A piece of ground heavily manured for a crop last season is best. Seeds of cauliflowers, cabbage, Brussel sprouts, savoys, kale should be sown now. Protect the seed beds from birds by running strands of black cotton along the rows, about four inches above the ground. Make a further sowing of varieties of peas according to requirements. Put the rows five or six feet apart. This allows for another planting of spinach, lettuce or some quickly maturing crop in between the rows of peas. A sowing of dwarf beans can be made in a very warm, sheltered, welldrained position. Where horse-radish is in demand, opportunity should now be taken to replant the bed. Turnips should be sown for an early crop. Early turnips of a small sise make a very nice vegetable. During the fine weather, the soil between rows of vegetables should be stirred.
