ULTIMATE VICTORY.
General Smuts Replies. To Opposition Leader.
NO BEPABATE PEACE.
(Reed. 11.30 a.m.) CAPETOWN, Aug. 29.
General Smuts, in Parliament, replying to General Hertzog's motion for the immediate restoration of peace with Italy and Germany, .'aid: "We are not going to be deflected from our course by the victorious Hitler. The German colossus with feet of clay in the last war was winning for four years' and collapsed in a few months."
Britain controlled the sea and would soon gain supremacy in the air. South Africa would prosecute the war until victory is achieved.
! Basing his argument on the belief that Britain's position is hopeless and that the war is already lost, General Hertzog declared that .if peace was not concluded, Afrikaanders would soon take the law into their own hands.
General Smuts replied: "I am still confident of Britain's ultimate victory." He submitted an amendment reaffirming the Government's war policy.
A supplementary Budget provides for an extra 3d a gallon tax on petrol, and raises postage from Id to ljd.
