COMPARISON OF RATES

BRITISH ANO DOMINION. A comparison of Army pay in Xew Zealand and Great Britain shows that, white men and non-commiwioned officer* in the Dominion are on a substantially , higher rate than their opposite number* in the British Army, officers , allowance* are on a 3owcr basic. j Details of British Army pay are taken from the official publication, "Army Royal Warrant," but the rates quoted do J not, however, include the 6d per «iay increase granted recently to offset higher cosi* in England. Before thi* increase was granted the British trooper, gunner, driver, signalman, private and similar ranks received 2/9 per day, compared with the 7/ for Xew Zealandej» in camp and 7/fi after embarkation.

The pay of British warrant officer* and non-commissioned officers is as follow*: Regimental sergeant-major, 14/; etaff *ergeant-major. 13/; regimental quarter-master-sexgeant, 12/; company sergeantmajor, 10/; colour-sergeant, 9/6; ser2«ant, 7/ to 7/6; lanoe-sergeant, corporal or bombardier, 5/; lancecorporal or lance-bombardier, 4/3.

Corresponding rates Jn the Xew Zealand Army are as follow, those in parentheses being the amount paid from the date of embarkation: Warrantofficer L, 11/ (13/6); warrant-officer IL, 110/ (12/6); company quartennasterisergeant, 9/ (11/6); staff-sergeant, 9/ (11/6); sergeant, 8/6 (10/); bombardier and corporal. S/ (9/); la nee-bombardier and lance-corporal, 7/6 (8/).

The rate? for X<-.w Zealand officers are: Major, IS/ (27/61; captain, 16/ (21/); lieutenant, 14/ (17/0); second-lieutenant, 13/ (16/6).
