A TIE IN SECTION PLAY
NATIONAL TOURNAMENT. AUCKLAND MEETS CHAMPION. WINNER TACKLES WELLINGTON'. After the fifth round yesterday at Melville Park in the New Zealand women's hockey tournament, Wellington had earned the right to contest the final to-morrow afternoon. The opposition will bo supplied bv the winner of the Aucsiand A v. Canterbury section tie. both teams winding up all* square after having played a draw when the carnival opened last week. The tie was scheduled for late this afternoon.
The games resultee : — A Section.—Wellington 5, beat Ashburton 1 ; Auckland B 1, drew with Marlborough 1 ; Akitio. a bye. B Section.—Canterbury 7. beat Wanpanui 0; Auckland A 3, beat Wairarapa 1 ; Kangitikei, a bye. Positions of teams at the close of section play :— SECTION A. Goals Cb.
SECTION A. Auckland B v. TJarlborough.—Adapting itself quickly to tte heavy ground Auckland kept Marlborough on the defensive. Forward rushes led by K. Bilkey (inside right) took play into the circle, but shote proved unsuccessful against the footwork of Miss (•■Sullivan in goal. .Marlborough surprised with a brilliant run by B. Morgan on the wing, but it failed to retain the advantage gained. Play reverted to Auckland, who resumed attacks though no ecore materialised before half-time. Early to begin another offensive. Auckland scored from a penalty corner, K. Spiers netting. Marlborough rallied well, and being late to tackle Auckland allowed the Southerners to pass the defence, for J. Kotliam to equalise with an easy goal. Again Marlborough took command, fast runs being made by B. Morgan (left wing), but she met with solid defence, M. Elliot (right half) clearing. The game ended with Auckland on the attack, but no further score was registered.
Wellington t. Ashburton. —The North Island XI. dominated an open game, in which the forward line shone. Hitting strongly, Wellington looked like scoring early, but B. Donaldson and L. Hansen defended solidly. Always .in position, L. Lamason (right wing) gave her side many scoring opportunities, her centring stots being a feature of the game. A fast pace was maintained, though conditions made it hard for players to retain balance. A runaway from Ashburton put Wellington on the defence. M. Donaldson fright wing) making full use of h*r speed. Wellington made a determined counter-attack, f. Lamason opening the score with a clean shot from the circle edge. Inaccurate shooting made Aebburton's attacks ineffective. A second goal from a melee in the goalmouth was netted for Wellington by F. Sungdren. From playiDS defensively. Ashburton broke away to draw the opposition. M. Donaldson using a flick ehot to score. Corners forced by Wellington confined the play to the twenty-five line, and right on time Wellington scored itn third goal from a breakaway, M. Teatman netting from inside left. SECTION B. Auckland A v. Wairanpa.—A good game was marred by the conditions, the ball being waterlogged when movements were attempted. Auckland maintained a slignt
advantage with IT. Anderson (left wing) making spectacular runs. Well supported by l> Gilbert-Smith in the half-line. Hiss Anderson pare Auckland an opportunity. * well-centred shot enabling H- MjeCutcheon, to score. Play fluctuated with wAirarapa, making determined efforts to retaliate, but Auckland penetrated again, and Miss- McCntcheon notched a goal from a scrcmMe in the circle. Eventually Wairarapa combined to open Its ecore. a timely centre br O. Mills from the wing givin; Mis? Cadwallader the chance to net. Auckland's third goal was scored again by H. MeCutcheon. P. Canterbury v. Wanganui.—Th3 matt-!i was one-sided, Canterbury dominating the play. At times Wtangauui looked dangerous. MUs Coneybeer (centre-forward) initiating pood movements, which lacked support.
