TWO WIN AT FIRST START. TARANAKI MEETING OPENED. NEW PLYMOUTH, this day. Staying on too eolidly for the opposition, Car Leaf won the Trial Hunters' Steeples in solid fashion. Commencing the last round, Promenade \v;us four lengths in front of Car Leaf, wil'h Conflagration and Last Match at the head of the others, but Car Leaf took charge entering tbe straight to beat Promenade by two lengths. Conflagration was twenty lengths away third, ivith Laet Match fourth Having her first start, Verulam, the fulleister to Bronwi-n, won the first division of the Wereroa Stakes in easy fashion Moymell, Gold Card and Gold* Blaze were" her closest attendants over the last three fur-' longs, and Moyniell hung on to beat Gold ! Blaze by a neck for second place. Gold j Card was right up fourth, with Valtour a good hfth. Minority won the Whenuakura Handicap just like a good hack. He followed the leaders into the straight and then came through to score decisively. Kupatrid and Tolaga made the pace from All Buns by and Minority, with La.-wood and Wave Length following. Eupatrid took charge at the distance, but Minority finished too well for him. Larwood wae a good third, with Ml Bunsby next, ami then followed Stratford, who was slow to begin, but was finishing on. Fine Finishing Effort. Biforn* had a comfortable win in the Hunt dip. He was always handy, and running up to the pacemaker, Hedios. about three furlongs from home he went away in the straight to beat Helios by eight lengths. Tigreterre. who fenced erratically. was a fair third, with Lactose a moderate* fourth. Harbour Bar ran off at the second of the double the first time, when well out in front. Royal Star IT. proved himself to be in a class above his opponents in the Waihau Handicap. He was always well placed, and soon put the issue beyond doubt once the straight was reached. Heroic Maid was the early pacemaker from Screen Star. Royal Star 11., Gold Dale (who did not jump out too well from the rails position). Noble Fox and Xed Cuttle. The field closed up at the turn, hut Royal Star 11. soon ,took eljarge to beat Screen Star by two lengths. . with Gold Dale a head away third. Clinch finished fast for fourth, just ahead of Kollicker, Xoble Fox and Heroic Maid. Beau Monde attempted to win the Ladies' Bracelet from end to end. but Hokumai. who wa« his nearest attendant throughout, joined him at the straight entrance, and in a great finish Hokumai won by a noee. •Hirangi. who was always handy, was n fair third, with Car Leaf a good fourth , . Knrerenui failed badly over the final stages. '"Making-his'second appearance for the day, Eupatrid won the Waverley Hack from end to end. Barry Boy was with him in the early stages, and this pair led Sea Link'. Captain Gale and Silver Gift out of the back and into the straight.
