SUPPLIES OF PETROL.
COMPARISON WITH BRITAIN.
Recent complaints that the present petrol restrictions in New Zealand are j undulv drastic are supported by the, fact that for most types of motor vehicle* the restrictions are even more drastic in New Zealand than they are ■ in Britain, which is in the centre of the present .war xone. . Information in the latest issue of •"•Light in liondon ; elates that the basic ration for various classes of car* are:—Up to 7 four gallons a month; 8 h.p. to 9 h.p.. five gallons; j 10 h.p. to 12 h.p-, six gallons; 13 h.p. to 15 h.p.. seven gallons; Iβ h.p. to 19, h-p.. eight gallons: 20 h.p. and over, ten «allon*. Three-wheelers are allotted three gallons, with a supplementary i ration of two or three gallons in the case of those with car-type engines. Motorists usins their cars for buM-j ness or other purpose of an essential j ! nature may apply for supplementary rations to their local divisional petroleum officer. Additional supplies are not granted for journeys between a motorist's home and his place of business unless proof can be furnished that no alternative means of transport exists. - ... For commercial travellers an -additional ration is allotted on the followin* basis:—B h.p-, 13 gallons; 9 h.p., 14 nllons; 10 h-p. to 12 β-p., Iβ gallon*; 13 k.p- to 15 n-p., IS gallons; Iβ h.p. and OTOT, 21 gallons. Additional rations are also granted for various special purpos«», such as hire work and farming. Officers and men returning home on leave from overseas, and also member* of the Xavai Services and the RAJ , ., are entitled to additional petrol vouchers enabling them to obtain approximately 300 mile* , motoring. The petrol ean be obtained in respect of a ear or motor cycle registered either in the name of the man on leave or his wife. In New Zealand private motorists are allowed four gallons of petrol a month for small cars, six gallons for intermediate cars, and eight gallons for large cars The provision made for commercial travellers in New Zealand is not defined, the quantity being subject to the discretion of the oil fuel controller.
